Five geography questions that trip up almost everyone

The map facts that look simple on paper and quietly crush quiz teams.

Geography seems friendly. Capitals, countries, oceans — how hard can it be? Then a question lands and the whole table goes quiet. These are five of the classics that catch out even confident players.

Which country has the most time zones? It's not Russia. France wins, with twelve, thanks to its overseas territories spread across the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean.

What's the southernmost capital city in the world? Most people guess Wellington, New Zealand. The real answer is usually given as Wellington today, but historically Ushuaia in Argentina is further south — though it's a provincial capital, not a national one. Quiz framing matters.

How many countries border Brazil? Ten. Brazil shares a land border with every country in South America except Chile and Ecuador. People always under-guess.

Which is the only sea on Earth without any coastline? The Sargasso Sea, in the middle of the North Atlantic. It's bounded by ocean currents, not land.

What's the largest landlocked country? Kazakhstan. It's almost the size of Western Europe and quietly holds the record by a wide margin.

If you remember even two of these, you'll save your team the next time geography swings a round.
